Wesley Guild Motto

Motto: “One Heart, One Way”

Jeremiah 32:39

“I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will always fear me for their own good and the good of their children after them.”

The motto of the Wesley Guild, “One Heart, One Way,” is rooted in this biblical promise. It reminds us that the faith we carry in our hearts must be expressed through our actions. It calls every member to a life of unity, purpose, and faithful obedience to God.

The phrase itself was inspired by the heraldic motto of the Earl of Exeter, Cor unum, via una (One heart, one way). This inscription appeared on a cross-shaped emblem at the entrance of the Earl’s castle in Britain and was drawn from Jeremiah 32:38–39. It served as a guiding principle for the Earl’s knights, symbolising unity of purpose and steadfast commitment.

The Wesley Guild adopted this emblem in 1898, and it was formally established as the Guild’s motto in 1903 with the introduction of the Wesley Guild Charter. Since then, it has remained a defining expression of the Guild’s identity – calling its members to live with one heart devoted to God and one way committed to His service.
